Artificial intelligence is the defining economic shift of our time. FAIR AI is the organised home of an optimistic, values-driven Labor response — embracing what AI makes possible while building the guardrails that keep it fair, secure, and equally shared.
There is a real temptation to meet AI with blanket resistance. It is understandable. But refusing to engage locks working people out of the room at the exact moment the rules are being written. We choose a different approach.
"AI is a threat. Resist every use of it, everywhere."
Blanket opposition cedes the agenda to those who do not share our values, and leaves the guardrails to be built by someone else.
"We are not anti-AI. We are pro-fairness. There is a big difference."
Optimism and accountability is how we can all benefit from opportunities that AI can create. That combination is what makes FAIR AI credible in the rooms where decisions get made.
Creating awareness of AI's benefits and risks creates the urgency of getting the guardrails right, inside the movement and in the public debate.
Bridging government, the labour movement, industry, and community — building the internal coalition Labor needs to lead on AI.
Through grassroots activism and genuine member input, FAIR builds the democratic mandate behind Labor's AI policies and guardrails.

When change comes, human beings — not algorithms — keep meaningful control over the decisions that shape their working lives, with real pathways when roles change.
Decisions about hiring, lending, healthcare, and welfare are being automated with little transparency and almost no right of appeal. Power over people needs accountability.
AI is trained on the output of workers, artists, and communities — often without consent or compensation. People must have rights their own contributions.

FAIR AI was started by rank-and-file members. It began in the Ermington Branch of ALP NSW and is now an organised body of the ALP (NSW Branch), enshrined in NSW Labor's platform.
Good guardrails need both sides of the same coin: optimism about what AI can do, and clear-eyed concern about who it could leave behind. FAIR AI brings people holding both views into the same room, because guardrails built on just one or the other don't hold.
At NSW Labor State Conference, on 4–5 July 2026, a motion to formally establish Labor for FAIR AI as an organised body of the ALP (NSW Branch) was passed — giving its work a democratic mandate from the labour movement.
"That NSW Labor State Conference establishes Labor for FAIR AI as an organised body of the ALP (NSW Branch), open to Party members, to advocate for workers' rights in the context of AI and to develop policy and best-practice frameworks that ensure AI is fair, transparent, and accountable."
